“A new age of post-rock and folk is upon us”
“swelt offer a calming antidote to the rigid urgency of city life, we encourage you to take the time to get lost in their beautiful music”
“Minimal, slow and wide-ranging, swelt promises a new future for UK folk and minimal music”
Talking about the single, lead vocalist and songwriter Reuben Brunt shares:
“My Only Reflection was written at a time when I was exploring the back catalogue of Jason Molina and also watching ‘Get Back’ the documentary, so I think those influences have come through in the music. Sonically I wanted to create something more rhythmic than prior songs but continue writing songs within a non-traditional form.
The lyrics to the song were mostly written in February/March 2022 around the time my best friend tragically died. The lyrics were written following his death and the grief and distress that followed. I found myself staying in a lot, playing music and spending time with loved ones. It was a strange period in my life and still feels very raw a year on. The lyrics are uncomplicated and are essentially me trying to make sense of that time. Performing it can be difficult but also cathartic. It’s probably the most personal song we have written to date.”
The single is accompanied by a music video made by swelt guitarist Chris Hicks.
Weaving tapestries of sparse, melancholic compositions, swelt meld influences of folk, Americana and post-rock. The four-piece, composed of members of Talons, Repo Man and Iceman Furniss Quintet, formed in Bristol in 2020 and spent the next two years writing and playing intimate shows around the city.
Delicate melody and vulnerability form the core of the band’s atmospheric arrangements, using voices and strings to create open harmony.
The first single, called ‘My Only Reflection‘, will be released 18th May 2023.
